DISCOVERING, LEARNING, AND ENGAGING
Pillars of Professionalism in Academia
In 2006 Purdue University released it's continuing Strategic Plan to take Purdue to the next level of prestige and excellence. In this document (attached below) it reads "The mission of Purdue University is to serve the citizens of Indiana, the United States, and the world through: Discovery that expands the realm of knowledge; Learning through the dissemination and preservation of knowledge; and Engagement through the exchange of knowledge." That might be nice as a university mission statement, but
why is that important to us as individuals?
As graduate student at Purdue, we are constantly striving to gather the credentials we need for that time when we graduate and make our way into the "real world," yet how do we know what those mystical portfolio properties are? Hypothetically an easy way to find out what we need is to take a look at the portfolio of someone we consider a professional in the field of which we want to enter.
If we dig into faculty portfolios from Purdue (or most other workers in academia or related fields), what we would find is also summed up by components of "Discovery, Learning, and Engagement." This is why we at GSEC focus on these aspects, as well as try to give you numerous opportunities and support you in bolstering them as you grow in your careers.
